Braces Versus Invisalign? Other Condition.?

My daughter needs braces in a couple of months. We've talked to our orthodonist a couple of times about braces. Many of her friends have them %26amp; she turns 14 this September. She has a crossbite, but it isnt too bad. Her teeth are also crowded %26amp; somewhat crooked. She also has a condition where two of her baby teeth haven't fallen out because her adult teeth are moving in her gums. So the surgeon has to attach a chain to them %26amp; move them down. She has her expander as of now %26amp; she's begging for Invisalign instead of metal braces. She has a small mouth and she thinks she'll look funny in regular braces. I'm not too familiar with this but I know its invisible and you can see the results quickly. Has anyone had any familiar conditions or had Invisalign? Do you have any opinions about the subject or suggestions? We were also thinking about metal braces for a few short months then switch to Invisalign once her teeth are somewhat moved. Although its a pricey decision, we are considering it.

Braces Versus Invisalign? Other Condition.?
She does not sound like a candiate for Invisalign. She should just stick with the conventional braces. Much better response. She won't look funny. At her age, all the kids have them. I use Invisalign (and I am 30) and I had to have brackets placed on my lower teeth because they simply were not moving.

Good luck!!
Reply:your ortho.knows best,ask him/her.

Both work good, but it's really up to your financial situation.
Reply:Despite their claims, the Invisalign folks really can't solve many common orthodontic problems, and if your daughter is having the "expose and bond" procedure (the deal w/ the surgeon and chain!) then things are WAY beyond the ability of invisalign to handle!

It MAY be possible to switch to invis. after a year or so, once things are headed in the right direction, but this is something only your orthodontist can tell you. (I hate to say it, cuz I don't like it when people come on here and just say, "oh, ask your dentist!" well duh....it's not like that didn't occur to someone...they just want other opinions!)

My opinion is that invisalign is good for some limited cases but is mostly a lot of hype and advertising, playing on people's esthetic concerns. Your daughter shoudl be told she can look "nicer" in the short run, or she can get it done RIGHT. Ask her if she wants to still be fooling around w/ ortho when she's 17...20...25 or get it done faster now! Ask her if she wants to be PAYing for it when she's no longer under your roof!!

good luck!
Reply:Ok just too let you know shes 14 so if you are gonna get her regular braces get the clear/white/invisible ones because I know how teens are. Im a teen and even if she doesnt look funny with them on I know people will still make fun of her! I wouldnt want that to happen to anyone.
Reply:I do NOT agree that Invisalign is a "lot of hype". I've seen it have great results in the hands of a well-qualified dentist.

However, it is true that Invisalign is not appropriate for all cases and it seems that your daughter's case would best be served by traditional braces.

For one thing 14 is a little young for Invisalign. Much of the results depend on patient compliance since the aligners are removable. Kids that age tend to take them out and lose them, so Invisalign is usually recommended for older teens or adults.

Since many of her friends have braces, it really won't be much of a stigma to be wearing them. She'll get used to the look and feel in a short time and the results will be worth it.
Reply:When I had to put my brace on, my ortho would have liked to make me wear an invisible one. He contacted Invisalign but he was told that my dental situation wasn't adequate for their kind of braces, so I had to put on a traditional one.

Has your ortho already contacted Invisalign, sending them your daughter's teeth's photos? Invisalign almost costs as much as a normal brace, but the producing buisness is very selective. Tell your daughter that, if she won't be able to be included among Invisalign's criteria, it won't be a drama wearing a traditional braces. Moreover, Invisalign could reject her because she's too young, in fact they prefer to work for adults. At the age of fourteen, your daughter's skeletal structure isn't completed yet.

Come on, if she'll have to wear a traditional brace she won't die: I mean, it is just for a couple of months. What should I say, having to wear it until 2009?
